I will not try to explain the visa regulations for foreigners in Thailand. And I can not remember the exact reason why I had to leave Thailand and renew my visa. I think, I had to change the type of the visa from „Marriage Visa“ to a so-called „Business Visa“ in order to obtain a work permit.
Anyway, on the 22nd of July 2010 the government officer, responsible for the foreign teachers in Mukdahan, drove me to a hotel in Savannakhet, I checked in and we went to the Royal Thai Consulate.
I had to stay 1 night and picked up my documents on the 23rd of July in the afternoon. Everything was done without any issues and I could return to Thailand with my first Business Visa in the passport.
Ich werde hier nicht versuchen, die umfangreichen Visa Bestimmungen für Thailand zu erklären. Und ich kann mich auch nicht erinnern, warum ich Thailand verlassen und mein Visum erneuern musste. Ich glaube, ich sollte mein ‚Heiratsvisum in ein ‚Business Visum‘ abändern um dann daraufhin eine Arbeitserlaubnis zu erhalten.

Ich musste eine Nacht in Savannakhet verbringen und konnte nachmittags am 23. Juli meine Unterlagen abholen. Alles verlief reibungslos und ich konnte mit meinem ersten ‚Business Visum‘ im Pass nach Thailand zurückkehren.
Overview … Mukdahan and Savannakhet are pretty much exactly on the opposite side on the banks of the Mekong river. It’s a few kilometers heading north to the connecting bridge and then back southwards to get from one city to the other. Überblick … Mukdahan und Savannakhet liegen praktisch genau gegenüber an unterschiedlichen Seiten des Mekong Flusses. Man fährt einige Kilometer nach Norden zu der Verbindungsbrücke, überquert diese und dann wieder einige Kilometer nach Süden um von einer Stadt in die andere zu gelangen.At the border I got the visa for Laos stamped in my passport. I wouldn’t call Mukdahan a modern city – but here everything appeared to be … a bit more antique. Nach Abgabe meiner Unterlagen war ich alleine und begann, für einige Stunden in Savannakhet herumzulaufen. Ich würde Mukdahan nicht als moderne Stadt bezeichnen – aber hier schien alles noch etwas … älter zu sein.One entrance to the big market next to the main bus station. Einer der Zugänge zu dem großen Markt bei dem Busbahnhof.Obviously the transport of goods appeared to be a bit old-fashioned … Offenbar war der Transport von Waren immer noch etwas altmodisch …There have never been any Olympic events in Laos. The National Olympic Committee of Laos was formed in 1975 and officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1979. Nevertheless Laos displayed a similar looking (slightly different shape, white ring instead of a black one, different order of colours) on a wall surrounding the ‚Old Stadium‘, built in 1961 already. Es hat nie eine olympische Veranstaltug in Laos stattgefunden. Das nationale olympische Komitee von Laos wurde 1975 gegründet und 1979 von dem internationalen olympischen Komitee offiziell anerkannt. Trotzdem zeigte Laos schon 1961 ein dem offiziellen Symbol ähnliches Zeichen an einer Wand des ‚Alten Stadions‘.Many building here looked like from a movie scene: Show the front side – but probably nothing behind it … Viele Gebäude in der Stadt sahen aus wie aus einer Filmlandschaft: Man sah die Fassade – aber dahinter gab es vermutlich überhaupt nichts.I didn’t walk in. In my fantasy it was something like an illegal gambling den with mafia memebers smoking opium … Hier bin ich nicht reingegangen. In meiner Fantasie handelte es sich um eine illegale Spielhölle mit Mafiamitgliedern, die Opium rauchten …This ‚piece of fine arts‘ has been drawn on the wall of the building in the picture above … So, maybe it was just a regular brothel with illegal prostitutes and thus nothing to worry about … 😉 Diese Skizze fand ich an einer der Außenwände des obigen Gebäudes … so, vielleicht handelte es sich nur um ein normales Bordell mit illegalen Prostituierten und deshalb nicht weiter besorgniserregend … 😉I guess, a few hard kicks against the central support underneath the balconies would cause the whole building to collapse … Ich glaube, einige harte Tritte gegen die mittige Stütze unter den Balkonen würden das ganze Gebäude zum Einsturz bringen …One thing I really liked here was the number of cars … Was mir wirklich gut gefiel war die Anzahl der Fahrzeuge …The front of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church. This building has been built 84 years ago! And now it serves as a nice looking guesthouse. Mit dem nötigen Geld in der Hinterhand kann man alles gut erhalten. Dieses Gebäude wurde vor 84 Jahren erbaut! Und jetzt dient es als schön aussehendes Hotel.Even the signs along the Mekong river looked quite old … Sogar die Schilder entlang des Flusses sahen ziemlich alt aus …One of many interesting looking buildings. But impossible to determine the history or the actual purpose … Eins von vielen interessant aussehenden Gebäuden. Aber es war mir nicht möglich, mehr über die Geschichte oder aktuelle Nutzung zu erfahren.There was a small pier for the ferries between Mukdahan in Thailand and Savannakhet in Laos. And I even saw somehting like a checkpoint where people had to fill in forms or just show their passports. But based on my observations, the surrounding area, the way how checks were conducted – it must be pretty easy to smuggle many different types of goods from one corrupt country to another corrupt country … Es gab einen kleinen Steg für die Fähre zwischen Mukdahan in Thailand und Savannakhet n Laos. Und ich erkannte sogar etwas wie einen Kontrollpunkt an dem man Formblätter ausfüllen und den Pass zeigen musste. Aber basierend auf meinen Beobachtungen, der gesamten Umgebung und der Art der Kontrollen – es kann nicht allzu schwer gewesen sein, Waren aus einem bestechlichen Land in ein anderes bestechliches Land zu schaffen …Hard work for the porters … Schwere Arbeit für die Träger …Probably cheaper than hiring space in a container or on a truck … Wahrscheinlich billiger als Platz in einem Container oder auf einem Lkw zu buchen …Tricycles waiting in front of the consulate to take people back to the border.
