Since I’m someone who does not drink coffee, this subsection might look a bit strange. But bare in mind that a flower shop doesn’t sell only one kind of flowers, that a phone shop doesn’t sell phones from only one brand … I’m pretty sure that one day after a bicycle trip I stopped at a small, local coffee shop and orded a Thai milk-tea. It tasted very good and since then it became kind of a routine to try that drink at several coffee shops in Chonburi province. And I kept this behaviour even after moving to Rayong.

Weil ich jemand bin, der keinen Kaffee trinkt, mag dieser Unterpunkt etwas seltsam wirken. Aber man beachte bitte, daß ein Blumenladen ja auch nicht nur eine Art von Blumen verkauft und man in einem Geschäft für Mobiltelefone Geräte verschiedener Hersteller kaufen kann … Ich bin mir ziemlich sicher, daß ich eines Tages nach einer kurzen Fahrradtour an einem örtlichen Cafe gehalten und mir einen thailändischen Tee mit Milch bestellt habe. Der schmeckte sehr gut und seither ist ein derartiger Zwischenstop zu so etwas wie einer Routine auf meinen Touren in der Provinz Chonburi geworden. Diese Angewohnheit habe ich auch nach meinem Umzug nach Rayong beibehalten.

This is how visitors will be welcomed in front of the ‚Mahan‘ Cafe in Bang Saray. It’s located at something called „beach“ inside a restricted area. But even if you’re not military personnel you can get access by either leaving an official document at one gate or cycle resp. ride through another checkpoint as long as you’re wearing a helmet on the motorcycle.

Das hier ist das, was man als Besucher des ‚Mahan‘ Cafes zuerst wahrnimmt. Es liegt an einem sogenannten Strand innerhalb einer militärischen Sperrzone. Aber auch als Zivilist kann man dorthin gelangen wenn man an einer Zufahrt entweder ein offizielles Dokument als Pfand hinterlegt oder auf dem Rad bzw. Motorcycle den Zugang über einen anderen Kontrollpunkt, an dem man aber zumindest als Motorcyclefahrer einen Helm tragen muss, sucht.

I still wonder why so many coffee shops are using surf boards as a decoration. Thailand is not famous for big waves and any surf activities.

Ich wundere mich immer noch warum so viele Cafes mit Surfbrettern dekoriert sind. Thailand ist nicht unbedingt für hohe Wellen und Surfspots bekannt.

This is what they served me there. It looked ok. But the taste was not what I would have liked to consume. Way too bitter. That’s why I didn’t finish it and left.

Dieses Foto zeigt, was ich dort serviert bekam. Sah ja ganz gut aus. Aber der erste Schluck war dann doch nicht das, was ich erwartet hatte. Viel zu bitter. Deshalb habe ich auch nicht ausgetrunken und bin bald wieder gefahren.

Another place I liked to visit during the first weeks of my time in Bang Saray was the ‚ECO CAFE‘ inside the ‚ECOndo‘ building. Easy to cycle or ride there with a wide selction of refreshing drinks. And after a few visits the staff offered me a discount card. After having stamps for 10 drinks I would be given a free one.

Ein anderer Ort, den ich zu Beginn meiner Zeit in Bang Saray gerne besucht habe, ist das ‚ECO CAFE‘ im ‚ECOndo‘ Gebäude. Ich konnte einfach das Rad benutzen oder später auch den Roller. Und nach einigen Besuchen bot man mir eine Rabattkarte an. Nach Stempeln für 10 Getränke wäre das nächste dann umsonst gewesen.

And the shakes I ordered there tasted really very good. Just as they looked like.

Und die Getränke, die ich dort bestellt habe, schmeckten wirklich sehr gut. So, wie sie auch aussahen.

On another day I rode south towards Sattahip and nearly reached the southmost point there when I visited the ‚Curve Beach Cafe‘.

An einem anderen Tag fuhr ich nach Süden in Richtung von Sattahip und bin beinahe an den südlichsten Punkt in dieser Gegend gelangt als ich dort das ‚Curve Beach Cafe‘ besuchte.

The ‚Curve Beach Cafe‘ itself is located at the end of a small road and the nondescript entrance doesn’t look really inviting. It’s just a long, rectangle box.
But as soon as you enter it becomes obvious why it’s a pretty busy spot.

Das ‚Curve Beach Cafe‘ selbst befindest sich am Ende einer schmalen Straße und der unscheinbare Eingang sieht nicht besonders einladend aus. Einfach nur eine lange, rechteckige Kiste.
Aber sobald man eintrat, wurde klar warum es manchmal sehr voll sein kann.

I personally like the cool, simple style. The concrete floor, the wall openings without glas panes and the colours white and brown fit well in this surrounding.

Mir persönlich gefällt der unterkühlt wirkende, schlichte Stil. Der Betonboden, die fensterlosen Wandöffnungen und die Farben weiß und braun harmonieren hier sehr gut.

Towards the bay the coffee shop opens up and offers cozy seatings.

Zur Bucht hin öffnet sich das Cafe und bietet gemütliche Sitzgelegenheiten an.

This view covers the term ‚dream beach‘ already pretty well.

Diese Aussicht kommt dem Begriff eines Traumstrandes doch schon sehr nahe.

That’s the view down from the cafe. There’s probably a straight access to the beach but I didn’t check it out during this trip.

Das ist der Blick nach unten vom Cafe aus. Vermutlich gibt es einen direkten Zugang zum Strand aber das habe ich bei diesem Besuch nicht weiter untersucht.

This was my milk tea at that beautiful place. Recommended.

Das hier war mein Milchtee an diesem schönen Ort. Empfehlenswert.

One of my next trips lead me to something like an outdoor museum for aviation and war veterans – mostly from the US.

Einer meiner folgenden Ausflüge führte mich zu einem Freilichtmuseum für Kriegsveteranen und Freunde der Luftfahrt – überwiegend aus den Vereinigten Staaten.

The plane is real and there is an even bigger one nearby.

Das Flugzeug ist echt und in der Nähe steht ein noch größeres.

Inside you will find seating with the original chairs and a central coffee bar.

Im Inneren findet man Sitzgelegenheiten mit der originalen Bestuhlung und eine zentrale Kaffeebar.

All that didn’t come for free. But the entrance fee of 100 Baht was definately worth it since you could use the ticket to buy cake or something to drink.

All das war natürlich nicht umsonst. Aber der Eintritt von knapp 3 Euro hat sich ganz sicher gelohnt weil man den Kaufpreis innen auch beim Kauf von Kaffee oder Kuchen anrechnen lassen konnte.

The province of Rayong also offers a wide range of different coffee shops. Within the next few weeks and months I will try to present a few of them.

Auch die Provinz Rayong bietet natürlich eine große Bandbreite an verschiedenen Cafes. In den nächsten Wochen und Monaten möchte ich versuchen, einige zu zeigen.
