After a few months in Nong Sung I had to go to Laos again in order to turn my marriage visa into a work visa and then be able to apply for a work permit.
Nach einigen Monaten in Nong Sung musste ich wieder nach Laos um dort mein Heiratsvisum in ein Arbeitsvisum umzuwandeln damit ich mich danach um eine offizielle Arbeitserlaubnis kümmern konnte.

Normalerweise ein einfacher Übergang ohne jegliche Probleme.My superior from the Mukdahan government office picked me up behind the border and took me to a hotel near the Thai embassy in Savannakhet. Mein Vorgesezter aus dem Regierungsbüro in Mukdahan holte mich hinter der Grenze ab und brachte mich zu einem Hotel in der Nähe des thailändischen Generalkonsulats in Savannakhet.I’m not into it and thus didn’t try it – but this must be the original. Ich steh nicht auf sogenannte Energy Drinks und habe diesen auch nicht probiert – aber das hier muss wohl das Original sein.First look out of my hotel room – towards the Mekhong river and Thailand. Erster Blick aus dem Hotelzimmer – in Richtung Mekhong und Thailand.Not really a modern hotel lobby. But everyhting was clean and I stayed only 1 night. Nicht wirklich eine zeitgemäße Lobby. Aber alles war sauber und ich verbrachte hier ja nur eine Nacht.This was part of my lunch at a nice restaurant. Laos is well known and famous for its bread which looks like a mix between a baguette, a croissant and a roll. This shows the remaining influence of France. Since 1893 Laos was part of French Indochina until it was granted a self-ruling status within the French Union in 1946 and total independence in 1954. Hier eine Beilage zu meinem Mittagessen in einem netten Restaurant. Laos ist bekannt und berühmt für sein Brot, das wie eine Mischung aus einem Baguette, einem Croissant und einem Brötchen aussieht. Das zeigt den immer noch allgegenwärtigen Einfluss von Frankreich. Seit 1893 war Laos ein Teil von Französisch-Indochina bis ihm 1946 schließlich die Eigenständigkeit innerhalb der französischen Union und 1954 auch die totale Unabhängigkeit gewährt wurde.At least from outside the temples looked pretty similar to the ones in Thailand. Ein goldverzierter Turm mit Trommel und Glocke.And even a few buildings in the city center looked quite nice … Auch einige Gebäude im Stadtzentrum sahen sehr gepflegt aus …… and not always typically „Asian“. … und nicht immer typisch „asiatisch“.But at many other places and buildings one could see that Laos in general is still a very poor country. Die Rückseite des thailändischen Generalkonsulats in Savannakhet.Then I discovered a very nice, floating restaurant on the bench of the Mekhong river … Dann entdeckte ich ein sehr nett aussehendes, schwimmendes Restaurant am Ufer des Mekhong Flusses …… and sat down for a Coca Cola out of a Pepsi Cola glass and enjoyed the quiet, relaxing atmosphere. … und nahm Platz um aus dem Glas von Pepsi Cola eine Coca Cola zu trinken und die ruhige, entspannte Atmosphäre zu genießen.It was early in the afternoon and not busy yet. Es war früher Nachmittag und deshalb noch sehr leer.I think, even in Thailand this bus would not be allowed on public roads anymore. But here in Laos – who knows … ? Ich denke mal, sogar in Thailand dürfte dieser Bus nicht mehr auf öffentlichen Straßen verkehren. Aber hier in Laos – wer weiß das schon …?What a swindle! Since my first visit to Thailand I always thought that all those golden Buddha statues consisted of massive gold and were worth Billions of Euro. But since I found out that they are made of concrete and just painted with golden colour … Ok, maybe only here in Laos. 😉 Was für ein Betrug! Seit meinem ersten Aufenthalt in Thailand dachte ich immer, all diese goldenen Buddha Statuen bestünden aus massivem Gold und wären mehrere Milliarden Euro wert. Aber inzwischen habe ich herausgefunden, daß sie aus Beton bestehen und nur mit goldener Farbe bemalt werden … Ok, vielleicht ja auch nur hier in Laos. 😉What a difference the colour makes … Was etwas Farbe doch für einen Unterschied macht …Obviously not even the white statues were made from real marble! It’s just shiny, white paint. 😉 Offenbar sind ja nicht mal die weißen Statuen aus echtem Marmor gefertigt! Sie sind nur mit glänzender, weißer Farbe gestrichen worden.If they know about it … ? Wie würden sie reagieren wenn sie das wüssten …?I forgot if they were un- or uploading those items. This was near the official border-crossing by boat. But it’s open only to Thai and Laotian citizens. Ich kann mich nicht erinnern ob hier auf- oder abgeladen wurde. An der offiziellen Anlegestelle für grenzüberschreitenden Bootsverkehr. Aber leider nur für Thais und Laoten.The light decoration of my hotel … Nächtlicher Lichterschmuck an meinem Hotel …Did they copy that from the Thais? Charging foreigners more than locals? Ob sie das wohl aus Thailand übernommen haben? Ausländer müssen mehr zahlen als Einheimische?It was a collection of dinosaur bones and stones, drawings and written explanations. I think, a few were even in English. Die Ausstellung beinhaltete eine Sammlung von Dinosaurierknochen, Fossilien, Zeichnungen und schriftlichen Erläuterungen. Ich glaube, einige waren sogar auf Englisch.The coloured lights on the wall illustrate the size of a dinosaur at its time. Although most of them ate just plants – nothing I would like to meet in reality. Die bunten Lichter an der Wand zeigen die Größe eines Dinosauriers zu seine Zeit. Obwohl es sich bei den meisten nur um harmlose Pflanzenfresser handelte – nichts, dem ich gerne begegnet wäre.During my stroll through Savannakhet I found an open gate and had a look inside the old stadium. Während meines Rundgangs durch Savannakhet fand ich ein offenes Tor und konnte einen Blick in das alte Stadion werfen.I’m not sure if it’s still being used. But at least there were two separated benches for team „A“ … Nicht sicher ob hier noch Sport getrieben wird. Aber zumindest gab es getrennte Bänke für Mannschaft „A“ …… and „B“. … und „B“.Not really any visible difference between a Laotian temple and one in Thailand … Keine sichtbaren Unterschiede zwischen Tempeln in Laos und Thailand …But the pediment on top of the entrance gate looked different. Not as massive as in Thailand, more delicate. Aber der Giebel über dem Eingangstor sah anders aus. Nicht so dominant, eher zierlicher.Same thing all around the world: Got your car stuck in the mud – you’ve got a problem and are in trouble. If the plank was the best tool to solve the problem? I didn’t watch any longer and thus didn’t know. Überall auf der Welt dasselbe: Wenn das Auto im Dreck steckt – hast du ein Problem. Ob allerdings das Brett das beste Mittel war um den Karren aus dem Dreck zu ziehen? Ich habe nicht länger zugesehen und kann es deshalb nicht sagen.Sitting Buddha statues – protected by a seven-headed snake. Sitzende Buddhastatuen – beschützt von einer siebenköpfigen Schlange.This group was practising for a danc performance … Diese Frauen übten einen Tanz ein …… while I discovered this nicely decorated, small longtail boat. … während ich dieses schön verzierte Langboot entdeckte.After a while they climbed on the truck and left. Nach einiger Zeit stiegen sie auf den Laster und fuhren weg.I continued walking and ended up at the market. Ich ging weiter und kam am Markt vorbei.The first impression was like … ok, it’s a market. Colourful, hot, not too busy. Der erste Eindruck war … ok, ein Markt. Bunt, heiß, nicht viel los.But then I saw that nearly everything was sold dirctly from the dirty floor or back of a truck. Aber dann fiel mir auf, daß fast alles direkt vom schmutzigen Boden oder vom LKW aus verkauft wurde.I mean, the selection was better than expected. Ich will nichts sagen. Das Angebot war besser als erwartet.A few vendors used some plastic sheets to protect the food from the dirt and dust. Einige Händler benutzten zumindest Plastikfolien um die Warevor Schmutz und Staub zu schützen.But in case that there was more to sell than the plastic could bear – the truck or the ground around it was used to ‚present‘ everything. Allerdings wurde in Fällen, in denen man mehr zu verkaufen hatte als die Folie tragen konnte, der LKW bzw. der der Boden drumherum genutzt um das Angebot zu präsentieren.Obviously expecting a lot of customers on that day … Hier wurde offenbar mit einem großen Kundenansturm gerechnet …I climbed up the stairs of the new, main building and saw this ‚ocean of umbrellas‘ – waiting for me to dive in again … Ich bin in dem neuen Hauptgebäude nach oben gestiegen und hatte von dort einen tollen Ausblick auf dieses Meer von Schirmen …It looked like most of the umbrellas were made from parts of old, ripped umbrellas … Es sah so aus als ob die meisten Schirme aus Bestandteilen alter, zerrissener Schirme gefertigt worden wäre …Local transport was ready to carry everything back home … Die örtlichen Nahverkehrsmittel standen bereit um alles abzutransportieren …… and I went back to the embassy to pick up my documents. … und ich ging zurück zum Konsulat um meine Unterlagen abzuholen.
