On the 22nd of August in 2010 a friend picked me up by car and we drove to That Phanom, a trip of around 110 km.
Since 1917 the district and the city are named after Wat Phra That Phanom, the most important Buddhist temple in the region.
Wat Phra That Phanom is located in the district of the same name, in the southern part of Nakhon Phanom Province.
There is a legend, saying that this structure contains The Buddha’s breast bone. That’s why it is one of the most important Theravada Buddhist structures in the region.
It was originally built in the 16th century. Every year, a festival is held in That Phanom to honour the temple. The festival lasts for one week and thousands of people make pilgrimages to honour the shrine.
Am 22. August 2010 holte mich eine Bekannte mit ihrem Auto ab und wir fuhren nach That Phanom. Eine Strecke von ungefähr 110 Kilometern.
Seit 1917 sind die Stadt und der sie umgebende Bezirk nach dem Tempel That Phanom benannt, dem bedeutendsten buddhistischen Tempel in der Region.
Der Phra That Phanom Tempel liegt im Bezirk mit demselben Namen, im Süden der Provinz Nakhon Phanom.
Es gibt eine Legende, die besagt, daß in dem Bauwerk ein Brustknochen von Buddha liegt. Das ist der Grund dafür, daß das Tempelgelände eines der bedeutendsten Bauwerke im Theravada Buddhismus darstellt.
Die ersten Bauten wurden im 16. Jahrhundert erstellt. Jedes Jahr findet zu Ehren des Tempels ein Festival statt. Es dauert eine Woche und tausende von Pilgern besuchen die Anlage.
